Earthway Seed Planter
« on: December 04, 2011, 18:39 »
Hello All,

I am new to this forum but not to growing and farming stock (inc Bees).  I want to plant a larger quantity of vegetables and would like to know if the above mentioned seeder is good, how much could I sow with it or if there is a better model or manufacturer.

Many thanks

Welcome to the site Busy Bee

What sort of quantities are we talking about?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Maybe around 1 rood per vegetable or 2-3 roods for carrots and parsnips...

Well, a rood (or rod) is equivalent I think to a pole.  There are 10 of these in a standard allotment plot.

So 10% of the plot to each veg, and perhaps 20-30% for carrots and parsnips each?

Having looked up the earthway planter, it seems to be an American seed planter with a slightly different brand name over here.  Cost somewhere between £100-150.

Personally I think that's an awful lot of money and you might have to pay extra for a dispenser which deals with such fine seed as carrots.

Well, being honest I will be selling my produce so I would be able to get my money back no problem.  It is not really alot of money if you look at it from a commercial basis.  Over a period of around 10 years its only £15 per year and I feel I could get more than £15 for the food I produce, espically for quality vegetables.

Mmmmm, not sure about the measurement but I know there is 4 roods in 1 acre and I also think there is 4 or 8 poles in a rood but not sure.

Anyone else would like to say something about the seed planter or if there is a better seed planter please let me know.

Many thanks
