Growing Figs, Grapes, and kiwi fruit Advice please
« on: November 15, 2011, 14:55 »
Hi I was hoping someone could give me advice on the following.
I have a south facing wall approx 10ft high and 25 ft long, which is also fairly protected from the wind. This was my 1st year of growing and have not yet got fully organised, however i was wondering if I would be able to grow a fig tree, grapes and a kiwi(DT Brown do a self fertile one).
This year I grew about 20 tomato plants in front of it,and had loads from them, but I was thought I might be ale to make better use of it
If these were not suitable, has anyone any advice on what might be more suitable to grow

Thanks Carl

Figs can take some cold, but most folk find they do well in greenhouses, mostly against early frosts which can damage the new fruit buds which are set the previous fall. Also, figs love to have their roots contained and do very well in large, moveable pots that can be shifted into the greenhouse or conservatory for winter.

Grapes are happy on a south facing wall, you just need to decide if you want eating or wine grapes. Note that it takes a lot of grapes to make one bottle of wine. There are now more varieties of grapes that are bred to tolerate low winter temps and you might want to consider these.

Kiwi fruit need a male plant and a female plant or they won't produce. The variety bred for northern climes like ourselves are huge climbers and you might not want to devote all the space they require.

If you go for grapes I wouldn't put anything else there long-term.

Fig variety brown turkey is hardy in most parts of the UK.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you have a fig, you could retain the roots by putting in four paving slabs to make an empty 'box' in the ground, that you can plant the fig into  :D

I see that there are self-fertile varieties of Kiwi available nowadays. Google it.
