Looking for a seed supplier with small portions.
« on: November 14, 2011, 12:45 »
Are there any suppliers that (whilst retaining value) sell there seeds in  smaller sized packs?

As a newbie I'd like to plant several varieties of each veg, both to discover the ones I prefer the tastes of as well as the ones that grow best in my plot.  It looks like to buy 3 varieties of something is going to cost over a tenner and involve 75% not being used (buying 3x250seeds for eg, when I only have room for 200 seeds total planted).

Any ideas where I could try but still retain some value for money? (if it's 3 packs of 75 but still costs a tenner there's no point)

Toiling through 100sq metres of clay - And I don't actually eat much veg!

You can often obtain seeds in smaller quantities from sellers on eBay. One such, very good, seller is Premier Seeds Direct.

You can also wait till shops like Wilkinsons start selling seeds in spring, their ranges are considerably cheaper than the likes of Thompson and Morgan etc  ;)

Just had a look on ebay (which had never occured to me before  ) and even where the portions are the same size, the price makes the wastage tolerable  :)

Assuming the quality, at least from the bigger names on there, will generally match the big online stores, I can see myself using ebay.

Thanks.

PS And I have a Wilkinsons in town, so will keep an eye on them, cheers!

You'll often get sent seeds from eBay in small plastic wallets rather than informative seed packets. You can always look up sowing instructions eaily on the internet though. :)

I've ordered 13 packets of seeds off this seller total cost was £13.56.

I believe DD likes Moles for both price and smaller quantities.

I had understood from DD's postings that Moles Seeds provide large quantities for a good price per pack.

Thats what I used these guys for last year and the germination rate on most of their seeds was abismal!

I've bought from ebay Premier Seeds this year so still have to see how they germinate... seems a good company registered with DEFRA... so should be ok..

Is there any mileage in buying a few normal packets of things you like and then swapping or sharing them with others?  Why not check with other growers and decide between you which varieties to try and share the seeds?  I've a friend who graciously gave me three white courgette seeds (out of six she had) for my birthday....doesn't sound like much, but this year her white courgettes were the size of rugby balls and tasted delicious! (and she got four or five  fruits on each plant.)  They fed at least four families each... :)

I bought a lot from them at the start of this year, and had very good results. Delivery was fast, quality good and prices an absolute bargain.
