Any idea what tree this is please?
« on: November 13, 2011, 19:29 »
Hi all, a friend of mine has a tree growing on his patio in a raised bed, he yold me when he got it off someone that it was an apple tree, but to me, it looks so much like a cherry tree. I picked one yesterday and took a bite of the small fruit, but it was hard, bitter and tasted nothing like a cherry, has anyone any idea's please??

Could it be a crab apple? (Malus sylvestris)

If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

I didnt bite deep enough to find that out Tony.... they seem way too small for apples though.... the fruit is only about 3/4" across?

Thanks guys, but I'm not convinced its an apple, this pic was only taken yesterday and  like I said the 'fruit' is only three-quarters of an inch across?
Also, if it were apple, the fruit would have fallen off well before now or grown much bigger than it's current Malteaser size, wouldnt it??

Crab apples only grow to a small size, the size that you say sounds just like a crab apple to me, plus they taste very bitter like you say, they are good for jams  :)
