Onions, garlic, shallots, broad beans...
« on: November 03, 2011, 12:58 »
Can I plant them now or is it too late?
Have just taken on an allotment and could get some in the ground at the weekend if it's not too late already.
At home they were in the ground at the beginning of October.

Hope the weekend weather is good. Special order for Devon & Cornwall required I think,
as I could do with planting the last of my garlic.  :)

I found out the hard way not to plant broad beans too early. I now wait until the second week in November,  so that the plantd grow cold and won't be affected by frost.  Onions, shallots and garlic can be planted anytime between October and March.

Hi,
Glad I came across this one, can I plant garlic by splitting a garlic bulb bought from the supermarket and plant the individual cloves ??

should I plant them in the greenhouse or outside and how long before I can harvest them??

any advice on this would be great

many thanks

It's far better to buy from the garden center OR buy some locally grown garlic from you local farm shop (this is what I do). That way you will know it is suitable for your area.

When you plant you must plant the individual cloves... not the whole bulb.. I agree try to get local garlic or from a garden centre as seed garlic. Normally about £3 for 3 bulbs and you get about 10-15 from each.

As said before, plant individual cloves, outside. Harvest next July - August, depending on conditions.

I grew some shop bought solent wight last Spring - came up well. I would say experiment if you wish, but back it up with some garden centre bought garlic, just in case.

Edit: I should say that the shop bought garlic I planted were labelled, so I knew the variety and that it grows OK in this country. I would never plant garlic if I didn't know the variety.

The main reason why Jak, is that the garlic you buy from the shopmay have come from warmer climes, and the new corms would really want to be growing there, rather than in the UK - or elsewhere...

I tried it a couple of times, but wasn't totally impressed, however, I can see why you're tempted, and I keep peering at the cloves in the smkt too...;0)
