Garlic, Shallots and Onions
« on: February 20, 2008, 21:46 »
Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and new to allotments. Got my first ever allotment in January  :D . I've marked it out, spread some compost, dug it over and now ready for some crops. The spuds are chitting, and I have onion sets, garlic and shallots laid out in trays on the window sill waiting for planting.

I live in Burton-on-Trent, East Staffs. I was going to wait until the middle of March before planting the onions, and had planned to do likewise with the Shallots and Garlic, as the packets say plant between Feb and end of March. Some of the Shallot bulbs are starting to sprout green shoots. Reading the excellent advice on this forum it seems they are hardy and can go in now.

So, is it OK to plant my Shallots and Garlic now? If so, we've had clear nights and frosts here recently. Assuming the ground isn't frozen is it OK to plant them. Or should I wait until its a bit milder? Would going from the window sill of a warm house, to the allotment and then a frost a day later shock them?  :?

Thanks for the advice,

Mark.

P.S. I'm determined to be the first person on the plot with a Munty Bean Frame  8) . They'll all be jealous.

Hiya and welcome Mark  :D

Get them garlic outside asap, they need the cold on them and are hardier than onions.

Welcome,
My garlic and shallots have been out now for at least a month.
In fact they say plant shallots on the shortest day and lift on the longest.

I wouldn't plant anything in frozen soil. Wait til it warms up

Garlic gets planted in Oct or Feb but only if weather allows. Always be guided by the weather

Thanks for the advice. It's looking like it'll be mild this weekend, so I'll put them in then.

Cheers,

Mark.

I was hoping to plant my garlic last weekend but when I turned the soil over I discovered that only the top had thawed it was white ice particles underneath. I'm now hoping to get them in on Sunday, going to the West Yorkshire potato day on Saturday  :D

Sounds great...what's a potatoe day? And how do I find out if there is one in my area?

Yeah, it's been cold in the Midlands and North. With the high pressure we've had a week of frosts.
