Courgettes and marrows
« on: October 08, 2011, 19:21 »
I've never grown marrows but grow courgettes every year, and I always like letting quite a few get big because I really like them stuffed. I'm kind of wondering whether I should be growing less courgettes and more marrows. Is there really any difference between courgettes and marrows?

They are the same family but technically different varieties.

Marrows in my experience have harder skins and cook slightly differently from large courgettes.  I suspect the taste is different too,  That being said, I know friends who stuff large courgettes in the same way as one would marrows so I wouldn't get too worried about it in the wider scheme of things.  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Rather keep the courgettes as courgettes... as Yorkie says the skin is harder when oversize and I find they do not taste as good as a marrow - remember a marrow is made to grow big and they do taste different.

Have to agree with the above ^.  Taste and texture are not the same so I don't use them as marrows, but I have been known to put an overlarge courgette into my chutneys.
Cheese makes everything better.

Marrows do store much longer than giant courgettes...... last year I had one still edible at Bonfire Night  :D

Maybe I'll try some marrows next year then. Do they take up a lot more space than courgettes, or can you get bush ones? And any varieties to recommend?

Long green bush is a very popular and productive one.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I noticed in the year's allotment show that the overgrown courgettes entered in the Marrow category didn't win anything no matter how nice they were...only marrows with yellow stripes were placed...
