Varieties to grow in Lancaster
« on: October 03, 2011, 14:36 »
Hi everyone - my first post so be kind :)

I'm in the process of starting a small vegetable plot in my back garden. I plan to double dig the plot this autumn, adding plenty of compost to the soil, then letting it lie over the winter. Next year I hope to grow some beans, peas, garlic (planting autumn 2012 for 2013 harvesting) and courgettes.

My main question is which varieties am I best off giving a go? I am based in Lacaster, UK and would value any tips from locals. Also, if there are other veg I should definitely give a go, then do shout.

My plot is about 1.5m x 2m at a rough guess. It's south-west facing so will get plenty of sun. There's loads of scope for increasing the plot in future if I enjoy it!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Welcome to the forums.

Are you sure that is the size of your plot? What you plan to put in it seems a bit ambitious if it is. You'd need that space for about 2 courgettes alone.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

In that space you could grow a row of runner beans along the back; one courgette plant and half a dozen garlic plants but they may get swamped by the courgette.

EDIT: Oh... almost snap there DD. :)

Thanks for the replies. Sorry for the late reply myself - been away. I may have slightly underestimated my plot. Not that good with lengths. I'm 6'5" and the plot is two average strides by 3, so more like 2x3m.
