Sunflower seeds and hens

I've been reading that a few sunflower seeds with husks removed are good for hens and their eggs omega 3 etc. But I would have thought they are also very fattening. So what's a few, and do you think they should be fed every day or just occasionally ?

And ain't the price of feed going up! 85p on a bag of pellets in 3 months just as Muntjac predicted in an earlier post.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

A few is good and puts omega 3 into the eggs as you said Richy.

Too much can cause a fatty liver and I think I've read it hinders calcium uptake too.  I mix some into their mixed corn so that they get maybe 12 or so seeds each.

Farmers here who grow specific Omega 3 eggs for sale feed their chickens flax seed as well as regular feed. Not sure if you have it in the UK. No idea what the proporation would be though.
I feed sunflowers to my racing pigeons so they keep warm for winter but I think they process it differently than chickens.

We grow sunflowers and after they have finished flowering we throw the whole heads into the runs. This is a seasonal treat and they adore it.

In the wild, chickens are omniverous and so I try to break the boredom of a grain only diet whenever I can. To this aim, as I think I've said before I feed soaked rolled peas and occasionally a good quality dry dog food that's been well moistened.
