Anybody grown honeyberries?
« on: September 24, 2011, 13:25 »
I bought a couple of plants to stick in a space in my fruit bush bed. They arrived today and they look healthy but have come from an 11cm pot so not very big right now. They are supposed to be fairly tough plants, but my underlying soil is solid clay, although the fruit bush bed has had plenty of compost on it and the soil is fairly good. I'm dithering whether to plant them straight out or pot them into a bigger pot through the winter and plant them out in spring.

Anybody know anything about honeyberries, any tips to help me decide which to do?

This has been asked a few times before (we nearly bought a couple of plants once  ::)), but there never seem to be many replies.....

They are fairly new to grow in the UK. Try a google search to find out more about them.

i have 4 plants, but they've only been in since the spring. "A Taste of The Unexpected" is where I read about them - try there for some info if you've not read it before.

(And they're known by half a dozen different names if you're googling).

Yes, I have tried Googling but it wasn't really very helpful. I found information from different sources was contradictory and not very informative. They shouldn't have any problems with cold weather, but what I'm not sure about is whether they can cope with the ground getting a bit soggy in winter.

This article says they do not cope with wet soil  :(

Thanks for that, that's a good article, I didn't find that one. I wouldn't describe my bed as a very wet area with ground water though, it's been improved a lot and the gooseberries and currants and cherry tree are fine in there, it's just not as free draining as a non-clay soil would be.

There does still seem to be a lot of uncertainty about these plants right now. That article is saying they need two varieties for fertilisation, another one I saw said they need four varieties, and the label on mine says they're self-fertile :) And when I Googled them and hopped around a lot of different sites to read about them, I was seeing a lot of contradictions like that.

my understanding is that it's like blueberry - you'll get some fruit from a single variety, but better yields from 2. I had thought that by growing 4 bushes i'd cover that, but i'm a bit confused now - i have to have different varieties to do the trick, is that right?

googling 'haskap' seems to produce a bit more info - especially from canada.
