sitting in the shed in the rain and thought I'd ask about growing carrots in a water butt I've cut down to about 400mm high. Should I make drainage holes, and what growing medium should I use? This is for next year.

It needs drainage holes and I have used 50/50 sharp sand and cheap bagged compost in the past for mine.

I use used growbag compost from the greenhouse tomatoes and get good results.

I grow carrots in 2L plastic water bottles, with the top cut off. 4 carrots around the outside and one in the middle. I pull the 4 outside ones for salads leaving the middle one to grow big, John.
P.S. I grow single leeks in the same bottles...........
