Blueberries are going in on Patch G soon. And about eight new black currants, which Mrs G has grown from cuttings.

Let us know how you get on Kaj, as we're in exactly the same position, but the raaaas (already on the Patch) have taken over about 20 s.y. so watch em...

And get early and late raaaas too if you can.

Slightly of topic - I am converting a large portion of my plot to fruit.

any one got any guide lines on Blackberries and Tayberries?

Have identified Buckingham Tay, for blackberries a couple of Karaka Gold and a Triple Crown.  All to run down one side of the plot that is 6m 40cm.  On posts and wires.

I intend to have the Karaka Gold growing fairly horizontally.

What I really want to know is this.  I am intending to put them in beds that are 80cm wide, plant in the middle so 40cm's each side of the plant, is this enough?

I'm suprised noone mentioned Goji.
They are delicious dried and extremely nutricous (SP?).
I eat them as a snack or on salads and cereals.... Yum!
A small pack can cost 3 quid or more in the shops so growing your own is very cost effective.
If you shop around, you should be able to get a decent two year old plant for about a tenner that should give you a small crop next year. The plant does not give a great crop untill about it's fourth year but it's well worth the wait.
They are very easy to grow, you can basically prune as you wish to keep it in check. They can grow to 8 feet tall if you let them. They tolerate most soil conditions are hardy and can survive drought.
I have a two year old bush plantted on my site and I have about 10 new plants growing from seed in the growhouse, it's slow progress with the new plants but hopefully will be very rewarding.
I have 2 blueberry bushes too but they like an acidic soil so I have a seperate bed for them.
Backcurrants are great as are raspberries and I'm interested in Honeyberry which I may give a go soon.

"The plant does not give a great crop untill about it's fourth year but it's well worth the wait."

There's the skillfull fruit grower talking - great stuff and thank you!

We're planning several fruit plant beds - about 4 s.y., and, next to some existing raspberries,  we've already transplanted blueberries, blackcurrants and rhubarb for a few years hence...

I want to grow apricots etc, but Mrs Growster has stamped her foot...

(It's actually a rather dainty foot, so doesn't make that much noise, unless you happen to be listening closely...);0)
