What new fruit/veg are you planning for 2014?
« on: December 18, 2013, 10:28 »
All the new seed catalogues are hitting my doormat/inbox and I was wondering what new things you might be trying out on the plot next year?

Along with far too many squashes, I'm going for achocha, sweet potatoes and celery (plus possibly oca  ;)). My plot's got a bit of a boggy end so celery might be very happy there!

Usually we aim to do something new each year - but you have drawn my attention to while we have new varieties there is no completely new anything......   Hmmmmmm .........

I bought another blackcurrant to help my jam production line a bit   :tongue2:

I thought I might give salsify a whirl

It will be our first year, so everything will be new.

I'm definitely gonna try Cucamelons this year as they look and sound lovey.

I'll also be giving Kohl rabi a go, too, as well as chilli's, french beans, onions from seed and peppers.

Scorzonera and salsify.  Giant tomatoes (outside).  A cylindrical variety of beetroot and a romanesco brassica thingy.

Butternut squash. They have been great this year.

Then the old favourites: chiogga, celeriac, parsnip, leek, carrot, onions, shallots, garlic, a few rows of early spuds, cucumber, several varieties of tomatoes, strawberries, black, white and red currants, raspberries, gooseberries, apples (five varieties and far too many) plums and pears.

Peas - snap and regular, French beans, maybe some other beans but not broads, spring onions, lettuce, pak choi, sweetcorn and maybe some broccoli and sprouts.

Will not bother with cabbage and cauliflower. Not worth the battle with slugs and caterpillars

pac choi i failed with two years running - everything ate it!  We didnt get near ....

But chinese cabbage (the ones that look like the result of a liaison between a savoy and a big gem lettuce) are brilliant.  They dont take a lot of looking after, have oodles of flavour (not like the ones in the shop that are intensively grown and pumped up with water), stand and store for ages.  One of my must grows.

:nowink: Aargh now you've done it.   Intervention!!!

-trying fat babies again, Khol Rahbi, more types of climbing beans and small pumpkins instead of the biggies.  I got red sprouts from the pass the parcel and going for celeriac too

@wrinkly1 ; Pak choi question- just harvested some today from guttering in cold greenhouse, very easy if you can keep the slugs off (which is why up in guttering on the bench) likes rich soil to bulb up, and cool weather-spring/autumn sowings are best.  It's under a leak, so waters itself!

Now you've all gone and done it.  I'll need top have another go at celeriac and Chinese cabbage.  I failed before, it's got to be worth another go surely. :)
