6 weeks, 1 Egg, 3 Chickens ???
« on: September 10, 2011, 15:35 »
Hi, Like several posts on here already I have a noticeable lack of eggs. Having purchased my POL around 6 weeks ago Ive only had 1 egg so far.I have 2 Road Islands, 1 light Sussex plus a cockerel that was thrown in free. Ive had chickens in the past that have laid with no problems. Having never had a cockerel could this be the issue???
They have a large run with plenty of greens and are also on layers pellets,

Help

When purchasing POL chickens, you should be aware that it may take several weeks before they do start to lay.

Breeders may label their pullets POL anywhere from  14 weeks upwards, when the reality is, unless a commercial hybrid which is bred to start laying at about 17 weeks, most pullets will not start to lay until 26-30 weeks, or even older.

You just have to give them time and be patient.  As you have purchased pure breeds you may have to face the fact that they may not start to lay until next spring.

Being pure breeds, the Rhode Islands and Light Sussex can be anything up to 30+ weeks before they start to lay.

Have patience, they'll get there in the end!

One of my Light Sussex pullets is really just beginning to lay regularly now, at the age of 40 weeks.  She laid a few eggs, then took a long break, then laid a few more intermittently over the next few weeks.  In the last 5 days I've been getting one a day from her so I hope she has now begun laying in ernest.
