Novice help please
« on: September 07, 2011, 14:58 »
Hi,
I have had my girls now for nearly two weeks (two weeks on Friday) and they are wonderful. All are well, chatty and beginning to get used to me.

I'm feeding them layers pellets, occasional weeds from the garden and corn.

They were 19 weeks when I got them and the second day we had them we had four eggs!! One was white, three brown (I have six girls in all).

The next day it went down to three for a couple of days.

Since then we've had a maximum of two, and the white egg has never shown an appearance again, only two in the two weeks.

None of them seem poorly and they all appear to be eating.

I appreciate that they may not be laying every day and that at least one of them hasn't got to laying point yet, but it seems weird that the one layng the white eggs gave me two early on and hasn't laid for over a week now.

Am I missing something really stupid here? Should I lay off the weeds? Presumably you'll all tell me this is perfectly normal?

Thanks

Hi you are right  it is perfectly normal they can take a while to settle into a pattern, they may be laying softies which are gobbled up before you get to check, don't worry they will sort themselves out :)

All my pullets took two weeks off laying - just because I went on holiday and had a neighbour checking on them!   So they went on strike to show me what they thought of that.  ::)

Two weeks really isn't long for your girls to settle into their new home.  Give them more time and I'm sure they will get back into the swing of things.

The feeding regime you described sounds just fine.
