Slugs and chickens??
« on: August 17, 2011, 08:53 »
I've read that chickens love slugs, well mine don't.  ::) Fisrt time I put one into their run, they walked round it, all very interested, then walked away, same thing the next time and this morning after a heavy nights rain, there was 3 huge ugly looking things and my ladies were just not interested. Is this usual? or do I have particulary fussy girls? I ended up disposing of these things, they just looked so gross lying there.

That's the reaction I was expecting  They do that with dried mealworms though, it's a free for all, good thing I've only got three.  :)

Nope, mine don't do slugs either - even though they go mad for worms, frogs and mice!

Never tried frogs and mice, do you give them the frozen ones you can buy from reptile shops, or are they alive, sorry for being ignorant here, just never crossed my mind about those. Actually I couldn't imagine a live mouse hanging around long enough for hens to eat it.

mine dont like slugs either, but a live mouse doesn't stay alive very long with a hoard of chickens chasing it and now they even have the cat catching mice to give them to them.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Maybe I've got vegetarian hens, apart from the mealworms.  ;)

Mine dont like the "normal ants" but at that time of year when all the queens come out they go mental.

Two huge nests broke out one day in july and the chooks were going mad chasing them round.

I eventually let them out and the decimated them in a matter of minutes lol  Thought half they time they seems to enjoy just catching them and didn’t both eating them all!
I hate signatures but love irony

Mine dont seem keen on slugs either.
Bit annoying really, because the slugs are keen on chicken pellets.

Worms create a ruckus and I've seen them "bobbing for flys".

We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Mine love slugs but are put off if too large.

I have also heard that slugs that have been poisoned can cause ear, nose and throat problems if eaten by chickens. This concerns me a bit as my neighbour has a veg plot just the other side of the fence/hedge to the chicken run and he is the kill of the slug pellet.

yes there's always snail trails around the run in the morning even though no pellets are left out. I've also worried about slug pellets, with both my cats and now the chickens, I just hope my neighbours use the animal friendly ones.

Mine do, and have found a  little spot on a wall to torment them, when they dare to appear.
funniest thing watching a little hen dashing across the garden to catch a fly/moth/butterfly.

Mine won't touch slugs but will happily smash a snail to pieces and eat it, I would have thought they tasted the same  Their top treat at the minute are my figs, I wondered what on earth they were all jumping up for in the garden the other day until I found some half eaten figs on the tree!
