When and what to plant in Tlaxcala?
« on: August 05, 2011, 18:12 »

Hi, Im staring to clean a piece of land at my motherīs house, Iīm planning to plant there.

I have been reading from some websites and a couple of books on what to plant and when, but most of the information is made for other climates (US or UK), I live in Tlaxcala, Central Mexico. THe climate here is a lot less cold than in the US r the UK. We will start having frosts in november or late october, and the last frosts are usually in February.

Though the frosts are not very low temperatures, maybe just a couple of degrees under 0 Cecius (32 farenheit), probably -3C (26 farenheit) at the most.

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me what can I plant under these weather conditions.

I also read about "cold frames", I would think of building one if this would broaden my possibilities significantly.

Thanks everyone for building a great community!

How hot does it get in the summer, and how much rain do you get?  I think you are a lot hotter and drier in the summer than the UK, but I might be wrong.

Ok, so Iīve been doing my homework:

August and September are usually rainy (about 100mm each month). After that, there is little rain.

Temperatures are about:

August: from 10  to 30 celcius degrees (50 to 86 F)

September and October: 3 to 25 celcius degrees (36 to 77 F)

November and December: -1 to 25 celcius degrees (30 to 77 F)

Welcome to the site  :D

I don't know what sort of seeds you have access to, but you might get away with dwarf beans, spring onions, perhaps some of the less fussy leaf crops, beetroot.

I'd avoid things like lettuce, radish as they won't like the hot temperatures.

Given the temperature extremes you'll get after August, most 'mediterranean' type annual veggies won't thrive so it's not worth starting them off now.

Can you get things like garlic or overwintering onions?  You might manage to keep them over winter.

Does any of that sound feasible? (Must admit I'm guessing somewhat!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I, too, had thought about runners as I think they are from that part of the world originally.  But I wondered about whether it was a good idea at this time of year given the lower temperatures indicated in jandrocamus's post.
