Probably a slug that got inside and hollowed the core out.  Webbs Wonderful seem to attract slugs from miles around.  Once they are damaged they easily rot and will spread throughout the centre.  The surrounding leaves are the last to go but the whole plant looks limp and dull.

I take extra precaustions when growing Icebergs now.  Copper tape around the top of the raised bed, and a regular supply of pellets.

The battle goes on....

Did it develop grey fuzzy mould?  If so, that sounds like botrytis and you need to increase ventilation and reduce humidity.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Meh...I was away for 3 weeks. Slugs had really nice lunches and dinners.
Cheers.

They're growing outside, natural ventilation and humidity. Mmm...no grey mold, just black leaves and slimy middle. And yes, there are plenty of slugs in my garden but I was away, none to put pellets down.

Icebergs have a tendancy to do this. One day looking not quite ready, the next gone rotten. Often triggered by a heavy shower or watering. I think the water gets between the leaves.

Yeah, looks like it. We had about 5 days of rain in a row. We could save them if I was at home. By eating  :D
