Blackfly on my sweetcorn flowers now!!!
« on: July 14, 2011, 17:08 »
 >:(
I thought they went for beans, not my male sweetcorn flowers!! Two of them are covered, more or less overnight! Anyone else seen this and is soapy water enough? (i've lost too much this year to pests to be in much of a sympathetic mood to blackfly) I am more inclined to a chemical response.....  >:(

I've never seen blackfly on sweetcorn.
I haven't even got any flowers at all on mine yet.

I couldn't believe it either but they are certainly there! I bought some Bayer organic bug spray and they didn't seem to like it very much which has put my mind at rest!!

It's not licensed by the EU, so you shouldn't use it, but it's up to you.

If you do use it- then apply it during the evening so that the tassel is dry to release pollen in the morning.

As this thread was resurrected, i work for an Agronomy company and our resident Sweetcorn/maize agronomist said that blackfly on the tassels is harmless to them, not very aesthetic granted but it won't damage the plant apparently. It's beans they knacker...!!
