Rhubarb
« on: July 25, 2011, 13:41 »
My rhubarb has had another spurt of growth over the last couple of weeks but, I seem to remember reading that Rhubarb shouldn't be picked for eating after a certain date. The plant didnt give us much to eat earlier in the season so I'd like to harvest some of this for eating but will it be ok?

thanks

Yes,

although it is said that the taste is a bit more harsh later in the season. You also need to leave a good number of leaves on each plant for it to store up reserves for winter. I had some last week and it was lovely.

Yes that's what I thought Nobbie but just needed it confirming. I can get a good few stalks off it and still leave a few on as well so all is good.

thanks

Same with our plants, went seed at beginning of season and has just put on a lot of new growth.
We pick some on sat but still left a good amount on plant.
Not sure when you should stop picking but our local show, 14th Aug, has a section for Rhubarb so I assume it can still be picked.

You can have a few picks at this time of year, but never take more than half the stalks, so leaving the plant to build up for the winter.
If your root starts to priduce skinny shoots then stop picking altogether as it needs to build itself up ;)

Mine has skinny stems as we moved it from Dad's garden where it had been on a no food diet for 40 years

I am just glad it has survived the move at all

When crown starts producing lots of thin stalks it a sign the crown needs dividing, did you chop it up into smaller bits when transplanting?  As for surving a move rhubarb is as tough as old boots so no probs there....

Even here in scotland i pick up to early Sept and it still puts on some growth after that to leave for winter. Done this for years and still gives a good crop each year!!

How about if it's producing lots of thin stalks but it's less than 2 years old? I didn't get anything from it earlier this year because it just wasn't growing. Now it's suddenly started producing lots of new stalks but they're all skinny. Is it ok to pick some of these or is their skinniness (?) a sign they're not strong enough?
