Housing Bedding
« on: July 01, 2011, 18:39 »
Hi guys,

At the moment I use Hunter's woodchip as my girls' (and boy's) bedding.  However, with the rise in price on woodchip, I have had to change the horse (who was also on the chip) to Bedsoft.  This is made from the chopped up stem of the rapeseed plant.  I wondered if it would be ok to use this on the chooks as it also rots down quicker.

Thanks  ???

It says it's okay on their web site (if this is the one you're referring to) but I haven't used it personally.

Thats fine to use. I'm using a similar thing called miscanthus (a kind of grass), also cheaper that woodchip.

I have been doing that in the nestbox to keep it padded, but with the amount of mud we have at the moment, having it in the actual hutch may just cause a big smell.  However, I will try that when it is not raining!  Thank you for the idea dawnie  ;) ;) ;)

I tried newspaper but found it just became compacted and stuck to the floor.  I had to scrape it off in the end.  Mind you it was a wet and muddy period so may be OK when dry outside.

so far the newspaper is working a treat, fold it up as i go and then hardly nothing left to clear up, guessing it would give a little extra warmth as it covers those little caps.

hemcore make a bedding out of rapeseed stems called rapport so the stuff you are now using will be fine  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

I was thinking of using my shredded post or shred some newspaper and use that as bedding, not sure if ok but would very cheap and good use of junk mail!
