It's been pointed out to me down on the allotment that i haven't planted my sweetcorn correctly. I've got 1 row planted rather than in a 'grid'. Something to do with pollination....
At the moment the sweetcorn looks nice and healthy and are approx a foot high.

Is there anything i can do to encourage a good yield of cobs?

You can try hand pollination.

When it's time, rub your hands over the tassles at the top of the plant, then over the "silks" on the end of the immature cobs.

1 of the guys on our plots grows them in rows every year, although he usually has 2 row not 1, and he has hardly any room between the plants which is why I think he still gets a good crop because the plants are more or less touching each other so they get pollinated

I caught Gardeners' Question time on Radio 4 where they suggested going against the conventional wisdom of planting in blocks and planting in rows. I can't remember their reasons though.
