One of the chickens holding her wing out slightly
« on: June 27, 2011, 23:04 »
Earlier this evening I noticed one of the chickens was holding one of her wings out, just slightly.

I didn't notice it when I went up in the afternoon, nor when I first went in the pen this evening to clean them out.  She was strutting around, being nosey around the fresh bedding as usual.

She was drinking fine and when I gave them some blood worms she charged over to them and starting eating - that's when I noticed one of her wings just very slightly out.

I picked her up and she didn't squawk or anything and I had a feel of the wing that she wasn't holding out before gently feeling the other one - they both felt the same and the handling didn't seem to bother her at all.

I did wonder if she was holding her wing out because she was hot - is that possible?  Will be anxiously waiting the morning to see if she is still doing it.
I always find that work gets in the way of life.

that could be the reason, just keep an eye on her today as it's cooler  :)

debih, a lot of mine were doing this yesterday as it was very hot here (for a change!). If there's no sign of an injury it's just her way of cooling off.

One of mine was doing the same yesterday as well, at one point she laid on the floor with her leg & wing cocked up in the air, it looked really weird :D
The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.” - unknown

Thanks.  She looked okay when I let them out this morning and I will check on them when I get home from work but hopefully it was just the heat then.

Hi there. If it is only 1 wing she is holding out then she may possibly have injured it slightly.

One of mine was trying to get out of the pophole first in the morning once (greed being her middle name!) and bruised a wing slightly in the process. She held it slightly out for a day or 2 and then it healed and she was fine. Just keep an eye on her.

Thanks Helen.

I have just been to check on her and she is still holding it out slightly.  It doesn't seem to be bothering her - she was scratting about with the others and she ran to me when I got there, she has laid and was happily eating the scraps I took up.  She let me pick her up and didn't make a noise when I touched her wing.

She was fine when I went up to clean them out yesterday and although I didn't see anything happen (other than the usual scamble for dried meal worms that I always give them whilst I am cleaning them out) it must have happened whilst I was there.

I will keep an eye on her for the next few days and ring the vet if it is no better by the end of the week.
