Too late to Incubate
« on: June 22, 2011, 12:32 »
Can the experts tell me please when it's considered too late in the year to start incubating eggs.
Thanks.

I'm not an expert, but I incubated eggs all through the last bitter Winter and had no problems apart from finding accommodation big enough to house the chicks as they will need to be under heat for longer during the colder period.
I also had to keep a closer eye on the younger birds to make sure that they were not unduly affected by the cold when they were finally out and about.

As long as you have your heat lamp and brooder and can transfer the chicks somewhere warm until about 6-8 weeks when they are fully feathered, theoretically you can incubate anytime,  but in the winter, the cockerels are less fertile I believe, so it could mean more unfertile eggs.

Its also worth bearing in mind that depending on your breed the first egg occurs somewhere between 18-24 weeks. If that coincides with winter which it is starting to then you may find your first eggs delayed until February or even March.

My maths shows that bird is equal to or greater than the word...
