Price of eggs.
« on: June 07, 2011, 17:09 »
I sell my eggs from a small rabbit hutch on my drive for £1 per half dozen. I've sold them at this price for nearly three years this way and sold them to a selected few for a long time before that at £1 per half dozen. The price of layers pellets and corn has risen drastically over the last few years and I'm seriously thinking about raising my 'gate' price. On looking in the supermarket I could not find half a dozen free range eggs for less than £1.57. What do you think would be a reasonable rise in my price?

hi orchardlady..

i've been selling eggs for a few months now. i sell half a dozen for £1 but they have to bring their own box. i charge an extra 50p for the box. to date only one person has asked for a box.

i think it all depends on where you live and standard of living. are people willing to take a price rise or will your sales take a hit?

best of luck

Well I live in wealthy South Oxfordshire with a Waitrose on every corner. I can't (or rather the girls) supply the eggs fast enough! I don't think the sales will drop greatly.

Hi OL,
Why don't you give it a trial of say three weeks or so and go for 1.50 which people are likely to have in change.  Anyone who buys eggs from you will surely realise the difference in quality from supermarket eggs and would surely not quibble, especially when they are still a steal!  Good luck!

Well, I was humming and hawing about £1.50 but that is a 50% rise....I'm not a very brave person. :(

I think a trial run at a higher price is a great idea or you could put a donation box out to see if people would be willing to donate a little towards feed (you could always put a little note on it blaming the goverment for the rise of corn :D )

Could you raise the price by just 10 or 20 pence per box?
Lidl sells free range eggs (6) for 85p here in Devon.

I'd think a 50% rise would be quite an increase!

Could you try £1.20 to begin with?

Does anyone else in your area sell eggs privately like yourself ... check your competitors £1.50 per half dozen isn,t bad but its a big jump from your usual price .. like the earlier comments I,d raise the price to £1.20/£1.30 to keep your cutomers on side and still ,make a little for yourself towards feed costs , I,m in the North near Leeds and layers pellets here are £6.75 for a 20kg bag... how much are they in Oxfordshire??

I sell my free range eggs for £1.00 for 6 and I seem to be the most expensive around our way.

I sell mine for £1.80 still, but worried I'll lose customers if I put the price up, they are a lot of cheapskates up here, and not just the low wage earners either!!!

I have just been to Morrison's and they are selling 6 free-range eggs for £1. I sell mine for £1 and people seem happy with that, but as we only have a few chickens it's only friends and neighbours that buy them from us.

GrannieAnnie, do you really mean £1.80?
