Fox-induced injuries
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:56 »
Our two chicks were attacked by a fox last evening.  They seem OK, the injuries being largely the loss of tail feathers.  But one has some not too deep skin wounds, I think where the tail feathers were torn out.  Is there an antiseptic I can apply to aid recovery, or is it best left to mother nature?
Many thanks.

Hi Bennett, you could try the purple spray that people use to help stop feather pecking, it is antiseptic as well, or germolene, or if the wound is nice and clean, once we used that spray on 'new skin' stuff.

Hope they will be okay!

clean her up and then apply a powder called wound powder - your local pet/equestrian place should hopefully have some. If they are stressed and they probably are you can also give them some rescue remedy which will help to calm them down.
Be very careful as the fox will be back now it knows they are there  :(.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Many thanks for the suggestions.  I have tracked down wound powder, which seems to be just the shot. Purple spray is also available. Cannot find rescue remedy, but will persevere.
We are always on fox watch, as the locals feed the brutes ...  Henny & Bella have decided it is a good day to stay indoors, so hopefully they will calm down.
Thanks again.  Sound advice & quickly!

That's exactly what happened to Alice, but she had three or four bite marks and the skin split in all these places, so she went to the vet and had staples. £75 later, she's had her staples out, had a weeks course of antibiotics and feathers are growing back at a rate on knots. Fox has been back into their compound, but they are in a secure run within the compound so he was stumped. Husband has instructions to make the compound secure asap.

How good is this wound powder and antiseptic spray?  As to be honest, I can't afford too many £75 vet bills for a £20 chuck  :(

We have applied the wound powder twice in two days now, and Henny's wounds seem to be coming along a treat as a result.  They both had a very quiet day yesterday, but today are out and about as if nothing had happened.  Bella even delivered an egg this morning, 36 hours after a spell in the fox's jaws!  She seems to have come out of it in much better shape, but all the same ...

Alice and Bernadette haven't laid for 2 weeks since the attack! I'm going to have to have words with them  >:(
