Walking Onions
« on: May 29, 2011, 17:23 »
My walking onions have now produced small bulbs on top of the stems. Does anybody know when I should harvest these bulbs? They are quite small at the moment and I'm wondering if they will get any bigger, or should they be left to mature a bit before I break them off for drying.
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

Can I ask why do you want to dry them?

Usually, eventually, the bulbils bend over and root themselves in the soil to make new plants.
I know the bulbils can be pickled, but wondered why you wanted them dried?

I cook and eat them  :)  Mine have walked all over the plot so I've been giving some away  :)

As Ranger Kris said, I don't want my onions walking wherever they wish. But if they root when they fall over, can I then take the little bulbs and replant them fresh, or do they have to remain attached to the parent plant whilst they root.

They can be taken off. This is how I acquired the bulbils from a friend of mine.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
