Garlic
« on: May 28, 2011, 18:03 »
Just lifted all my garlic :)  It was bought in the local market, at the fruit and veg stall. The same stuff that we normally eat. It was planted during last September, over 100 cloves were sowen and they all grew beautifully. some of the bulbs are as big if not bigger than the originals that I bought. there is obviously 2 varieties as some are white and some are purple. Have tased some and they are very strong. They are now in my greenhouse at home drying out.

Is yours any early maturing variety, because I planted mine last October and it won't  be ready for another 6 weeks by the looks of it.

Glad you have got a good crop  :D

Shop bought, we were told. So who knows what it was....

Well done. I only took on my allotment in March, so haven't been able to overwinter my garlic. I did plant them in modules outside as soon as i new i was getting a plot however, so hopefully they got enough of a start.
Any idea how garlic does if you don't overwinter it?

Garlic can be planted over-winter or in the spring. :)

I planted mine in January due to a house move, how do you know when it's ready to lift? It's the first time I've grown it.

we watch out when the foliage begins to die down and the tops produce the flower head. We planted ours around November and it happily survived the harsh cold winter. again its shop bought and some are purple skinned and some are white.

will the bulb be visible outside or are they buried?
mine have thick stalks but I thought I read (over wintering ones) are ready by august. thats whopping 10 months in the soil.  :)

The bulbs stay buried, so you can't see what there doing unless you do a bit of gentle investigating ;)
As previously said, they're ready to harvest when the leaves start to die back...which depends on planting time and variety.

They had all started to turn yellow and some of them had sent up flower spikes which I cut off as they appeared. They had been fed with sulphate of amonia in march but nothing else exept watering whilst it was very dry in March and April. This was my first real attempt at growing garlic as I only got my allotment last July. All of my Japanese onion that were planted at the same time as the garlic will also soon be ready for lifting as all the tops have decided to lie down after the recent gales :(.

Phew I saw a flower on one of mine at the weekend and thought all was lost.  I took it off though and am pleased to hear that they are just getting to the nearly ready stage.  This is my first time grewing garlic and I can't remember what variety it is.  I'll have to look in the shed for the packaging.  I am sure it's in there somewhere ........

If your garlic has done well, keep some back for planting next season.

Sounds good, Malturn, congratulations! By the way, is there any difference in the taste? Purple one should be little bit stronger, isn't it?
