too early to plant out dahlia?
« on: May 24, 2011, 14:09 »
i've got a large dahlia (grown from tuber) and some small ones (grown from seed). they're pretty much outgrowing their pots, and I wondered whether it was too early to plant them out? i've been popping them outside for the last few days to harden them off, but don't want to risk losing them, or halting their growth. i'm in east sussex, and they'd be going in a sunny flower bed (clay soil)

As long as you haven't got any more frosts forecast they can go out - mine will go out tomorrow or Thursday as it's meant to be rather nippy here in Stratford on Avon tonight, but like you my dahlia's are ready to go!

I have planted some- grown from seed- out and found that originally they were too exposed but having put them under a cloche they seem to be ok.

They don't like a drying wind it seems.
