too late to plant dahlia tubers?
« on: June 03, 2010, 12:18 »
Hi all,
My Grandad has given me some dahlia tubers, I have read other posts about growing them in trays for cuttings etc, I think I'm a bit late for that? So would it be best to plant them straight in the ground at this time of year?

I was planting dahlia tubers over the past 3 weeks (I had a lot to put in this year!) and the first ones have just started to come up, so you might be OK for a late flowering.

If they are well dried out though, you might want to keep them if you want them to make cuttings from for next year.  We have a couple of dahlia afficionados here, so I'll leave the technicalities up to them, but I believe you can start as early as Feb for cuttings.

Me, I just bung them in the ground and cross my fingers to see what comes up!

You've plenty of time to either plant them or take cuttings. They grow pretty fast once they get going ;)

great thanks, dahlia planting added to my list of jobs for tommorrow then! Perhaps one of you could help me with a couple more related questions? How far apart  do you plant each tuber and do they like to go in to moist soil?

I plant them about 6 inches apart and in moist soil, although no expert, they are looking mighty fine at the mo  :)

It kind of depends on the Dahlia ;)

Most of ours grow taller than 4' so we plant staggered double rows 18" between plants, 10" between double row, 3' between each bed of double rows.

Same as most plants we water in when we plant them.
