crocus bulbs
« on: May 21, 2011, 13:01 »
I've just taken some crocus bulbs out of a pot that I need for some herbs. They are spring flowering.Should I plant them in the ground straight away or keep them until the early autumn and plant them then.If I should keep them until the autumn how should I store them.(Just got a spring bulb catalogue through the post so I'm starting to plan for next spring already)

I would suggest you store them cool, dark and dry until the autumn then plant them.

Now here's where I'm the opposite. I just purchased, very cheaply, many large pots of finished bulbs from a shop, and I intend to plant them all out as soon as the foliage dies down. I do this now because the bulbs will only dry out over the summer since I don't have perfect storage conditions. And I'll most likely forget about them come fall.

I think I'll go for the planting now plan as they'll have more chance in the soil then in a brown paper bag that I won't find again until this time next year.

I would have advised planting out a couple of months ago whilst bulbs were still flowering. I'd be concerned planting them out now while they should be going into a resting period, that going into the soil will make them try to grow and upset their cycle.

Let us know how you get on! :D
