manky marrows, too late butternut
« on: August 30, 2007, 09:20 »
Many of my green bush type marrows have seriously pitted, yellow & brown patchy die back leaves (a bit like you saw with the potatoe blight), also covered in mildew.  Surprisingly the yellow fruiting ones (Gold Rush, and a yellow globe type that I was given) appear healthy, as do my pumpkin type.

I've removed most of the bad leaves, leaving healthier new shoots.  It looks really sad to see what had once been healthy lush bushes reduced to stumps, but at least the bees should be able to find the flowers now!

Does anyone else have this problem, and what is it?  It seems a bit too early for natural die back.  Do you think it is the mildew from all the wet weather, followed by a (brief) warm spell?

Also, most of the older butternut leaves look yellowy but new growth is absolutely fine, in fact they are taking off quite well now if it were not for the fact it is nearly September and I have just one baby butternut fruit!
Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.
Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.
