Possibly butternut squash - too late?
« on: September 19, 2009, 19:01 »
I've got a plant growing in my raised beds which I'm pretty sure is a butternut squash. The seed must have been in the home-made compost which I spread as a mulch last autumn and it's looking very healthy, especially since the peas finished and isn't jostling for space. It's germinated naturally and, I'm presuming, in a seasonal (as opposed to articifical) time frame.

It's got buds which look ready to open, but I'm presuming that there is not really any time left for the fruit to be pollinated and grow but I'm trying to find out if this is the case.

If I won't get anything I'll be ruthless and cull the plant and put extra spring cabbage in. If I could get a bonus crop (especially with the poor-weather failures this year) then I'm happy to protect it from the frost and to see what happens.

Any experts?
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

Ditto.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I agree - if you need the space I would look upon it as an added bonus for the compost heap. It'll never make it in time to fruit.  :(

Ah...I've only got enclosed 'darlec' bins  :(.

Oh well, might have to be ruthless!
