dead mice
« on: August 29, 2007, 13:43 »
not sure where to put this so if its in the wrong place i'm sorry. we hane had 3 dead mice in the garden recently, 1 had fell in a bucket of water so we know how that died but the other 2 were found dead on the lawn a couple of weeks apart.

my question is this - the night before i found the last one i had put some slug pellets down on the floor of the greenhouse could this be what killed it?

Don't know about the slug pellet thing, but have you got any cats around that could have dumped them on the lawn?

If the mice had no visible scars from a cat, then it is possible they have taken a fancy to nibbling the slug pellets and have been poisoned.

Certainly birds and hedgehogs that eat poisoned slugs can be killed by the poison load, so if mice eat them directly i would expect it to be fatal.

It could be that someone has put poison down for the mice. It doesn't work immediately and therefore they die away from the bait.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

Neither do the ones that our cat brings back as 'presents'!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I'd echo the sentiment that cats don't always actually damage the small creatures they like to kill, particularly mice always seem to be deposited intact when delivered to me as trophys.  Often find dead mice and small birds on the lawn, my bet would be on local cats rather than slug pellets.

do you have nuts out? - for the birds - before anyone like shaun asks - mice are allergic to peanuts - they go into shock if they eat too many.

I'd go with cats as well, 1 of mine kills squirrels and never leaves a mark.

poor things

Was watering up the lottie with the can, got blocked and thought it was leaves so pulled the thing sticking out of the spout, it was a dead mouse and it was wedged up the pipe. Gave me the squirms. found one in a water butt too, felt bad because it must have swam for ages till its demise.
Feel terribly guilty so I put stick in all the butts now for them to climb out.

But Leeky, surely if they can climb out on the stick, they can climb in as well. Perhaps some mini life rings would be the answer!
