Silly fertiliser question
« on: August 29, 2007, 13:07 »
I have prepared my bed for the autumn onion and shallots. As its a newly reclaimed plot, it has not been manured for some years and it is too late to do it now for onions/shallots.

My reference book says to mix in a 'general fertiliser' instead. Can anyone recommend a general fertiliser? Is this like a bag of compost or a liquid feed? Could I use the 'worm juice' from my wormery?
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

You could top-dress with compost now if you want to but they'll really not be doing too much growing before winter sets in.  Winter rains will leach out any solubles.

I'd be tempted to feed them in late spring since that is mostly when they'll need it.  Worm juice would be perfect, also comfrey tea, nettle tea, manure tea, compost tea.   Do not feed at all after early June (to avoid thick necks).

Others may come along with differing advice.  And you may welcome non-organic suggestions (your Profile doesn't say  :( ).   :D

Nope but her signature does

General fertilizer to me is growmore or blood, fish and bone.
