Protecting strawberries from frost
« on: April 25, 2011, 18:00 »
I've heard on the weather report that we may get a frost in the UK this week. I also heard that strawberries are vulnerable to frosts. As my strawbs are in pots I was thinking of moving them into my plastic greenhouse. Does anyone know if this would protect them enough from any frosts?

During the winter, strawberry plants can tolerate quite heavy frosts, as the plants are dormant. However, now the plants are growing and even flowering, a frost could damage them as the plant rehydrates. Plus, the flowers are sensitive to low temperatures.

The plastic greenhouse should be enough to protect them :)

If they have already been living outdoors for some time they will laugh at the sort of frosts (if any) we are likely to get from now on.  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If they are in pots though, it would be better to be safe than sorry if there is a frost forecast surely?

This is not correct going by my experience last year, when the flowers got clobbered with the May frosts and turned black. There were quite a few reports of this happening last year.

open strawberry flowers can get frosted and then won't set fruit, closed flowers will be ok.

see here for RHS info about it

OK, I'll quietly crawl away into a corner; as with all of my posts they are based purely on my own experiences and I didn't have any problems last year with strawberries even with the late frosts.  :)

I am a beginner and assumed that as my strawbs survived weeks under the snow outside they would be ok with a frost but they didnt have flowers on then.

Thanks for the advice - amazing how much I have learnt on here!

Yeah me too, now I'm scared for the poor flowering strawbs that are firmly set in the bed. I might put an extra fleece on them.

A sheet of newspaper with a stone on each corner does the trick. :)

the frost can only spoil the flowers if they are open, and they are not usually all open at once.
So a one off late frost shouldn't make much difference to the crop.
If it looks as if there will be a run of frosty nights, then it is probably worth covering them ;)
