Autumn raspberries
« on: April 24, 2011, 01:01 »
I'm having a bit of memory lack and have forgotten if I should thin out the new canes coming up or leave them to do their own thang? They are quite prolific this year due to copious amounts of chicken s**t deposited by the lovely ladies.

I leave mine to do their own thing and always have a good crop - others may have a different opinion though!

I never thin mine other than digging out the odd escapee that comes up outside their alloted space and we get loads of fruit.  This is more out of laziness and lack of time than any scientific reason mind

Didnt thin mine last year and got quite a poor crop. So this year I cut them down to the ground about a month ago and they are sending up shoots now. Fingers crossed.

Cant wait for some rasberry jam!!

Regards, WG

If you have autumn fruiting raspberries you do need to cut them right down each year, so you did the right thing WG.  I did mine at the beginning of March but usually I do them a bit earlier than that  :)
