I garden on heavy clay soil and these don't do well.  Any advice?  I am wondering whether I should give up or try something else.

Raspberries are quite shallow rooted and dislike a cold wet soil  , so l would spread a 6” layer of good well rotted compost & manure and plant your canes with the roots just under the surface and firm well in.
 I too have heavy clay on my plot and this is how l established my rasps and they are now in their 4th year.
I give them a good mulch each year when l prune in February .
