sweetcorn idea?

well its my first year growing sweetcorn :) cant wait for it to be on the BBQ

but i was chatting to someone who says they grow a pea up the plant to stop pests or disease? is this a good idea or not?

IMO It would just strangle the corn and get in the way of pollination :(

i did wonder, i wasnt going to do this, being my first sweetcorn crop and got disease resistant ones, so i think i will stick to the packet instructions lol

Sweetcorn is remarkably pest- and disease-free anyway, probably because it's not been around long enough in this country for problems to develop (although I did once catch next door's young cat eating a very young one thinking it was grass. ( :mad:) Even that one recovered though!)  :)

The peas might also cut down the amount of sun the cobs will get - they form fairly low down on the stalk. I planted some next to my rows of peas last year and didn't get a cob unlike other years.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

This sounds like the beginning of a 'Three Sisters' type thread (beans up corn/underplanted with squash). Worthwhile doing a search on this (Google and this site). You'll find strong opinions mind you.
