poorly chick can anyone help?
« on: April 14, 2011, 10:09 »
hi, i have come down this morning to another legbar chick hatched in the incy but this one doesnt look good, it keeps throwing its head back and rolling around on its back. If i hold it upright it tries to throw its head back and shakes it around then waits to get its breath with its head upside down. it really doesnt seem to like to be the right way up! i think im going to have to cull it but wanted to check on here first.

i read on another site that someone had the same or a very simular situation to this before and they left the chick in a cup/small container to keep it the right way up and after a few hours it righted itself. my chick has been placed the right way up in a cup lined with toilet paper all day but doesnt seem to be any better, it will drink if offered but hasnt eat yet. it doesnt seem distressed jus lays on its back! i dont know what to do! i dont want to cull it untill ive tried everything i can to help!

Remember the old saying... "better than a week too soon than a day too late"  some chicks just don't hatch right.  I usually give them 48 hours, and if there is no improvment, then I cull.  A chick which is not right on hatching will never make for a strong healthy hen, and although it's not nice, it is much easier to cull a baby chick than it is a three week old chick!

I agree with Casey.  Mine get a couple to three days and if not right then I cull.  Seems harsh but its better than the poor things suffering which they will in the long run.

i decided to cull the chick at lunch time today, it wasnt getting any better and was starting to get weak, still shaking its head around and flopping on its back it wouldnt eat anything so thought it was best to not let it suffer anymore.  :(

:( Sorry to hear that Massa. It can be hard to make those kind of decisions, but it sounds like you did the right thing for the little mite.
