Frost this week
« on: April 12, 2011, 06:37 »
I was going to put some spuds in the ground but I've heard we're going to have a bit of frost.  Can anyone tell me, when frost attacks spuds, does it do it to the leaves or can it get to them when they're buried and there aren't any leaves yet?

It will nip the leaves so no problem with planting before the last frost. Keep an eye on the weather and if frost is predicted once they're through then earth up to protect. Not the end of the world if they get a little bit frost nipped either, but the plants won't look pretty and yields will be reduced, although exactly how much varies.

They are quite safe while underground. Plant them and when they begin to show, earth them up to protect from any late frosts.

Plus if they have been earthed up all you can, and we still get a late frost, you can cover with fleece, newspaper, and/or grass clippings.

I put grass clippings on mine anyway because a few tubers always grow close tot he surface, and go green, and the grass clippings keep the light off them :)

Was that the Daily Express, dave?  They are, after all, renowned for their accurate weather forecasts  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Spuds will still be okay though if I plant them this week or on the weekend to be sure - maybe I'll hold fire on the peas though ;)

Doesn't look like much frost for the south of the country come friday onwards! Looks like its going to be a warm weekend (18 - 20) and next week is going to carry on that trend thanks to another high pressure system! :D But there is always time for change afterwards!
