I'm on the forum because my Kids want to get Chickens and I need to find out more.

It's really quite funny when an 8 year-old asks if we'll need to get 'Chicken Insurance'.

Not so sure it's not a good idea now.

£41.40 per annum £35 excess up to £1500 vet fees for birds 12 weeks old+ according to Exotic Direct - if hens counts as exotic small birds.

I know what I'd have done there's no way I'd spend that on my cat let alone one of the hens  :shock:

Most I've ever spent is £6/bird or £14 odd quid for flubenvet for worming after that it would be for the chop.

Anyway Yes keep hens they are great, your kids will love them so will you and love the eggs.

Our Black Rock and our Bovan Goldline were £10. Our Speckledy was £15. They came POL and were vaccinated and wing clipped and came from the Domestic Fowl Trust. I think this is top whack for layers really. We just wanted our first chickens to be as good (therefore idiot proof!) as possible as we are beginners.
You can get POL's for as little as £3 if you shop around

every  chicken died of natural causes so why give them money grabbers  anything for it ... total lunacy . if your serios about keeping chickens it wil cost about £100 a year for keeping six hens if you feed as i do ,, shed and pen is extra unles you decide to free roam them and can utilise another building
and you can get 6 birds for less than £30 or get battery ones as little as £10 the six

$20 is about £8 english  depending on what breeed they could be a bargain

i spent £160  on a trio of silver duckwing oeg bantams proven show stock i then spent a further £40 on vets bills when the cockbird dislocated its leg at the hip joint, i went on to breed some cracking birds from him including 2 international show winners. basicaly i got what i paid for.

Our Ex Batts were 50p each, and the point of Lays £3.95 for the Bovans Goldlines and £4.25 for the Amberlinks. And nice birds they are going to be by the look of them.  Very placid.
