Hessian sacks and blight
« on: August 22, 2007, 21:35 »
I store some of my potatoes in hessian sacks,my question is how do I clean a sack that a blighted potato oozed into before I spotted it or is it enough to dry it and will the spores die then?

You could boil it if you wanted to be sure.

I shudder to think what would happen to hessian if boiled!! I think it would cold wash but am not sure if that would be enough.

Not a lot I wouldn't think.   Freeze it then.

Drying thoroughly would be better than cold washing.

Freezing I like as long as I am gentle.I know that if you accidentally freeze tights(line drying in winter)a good hard shake reduces them to shreds! When I have a bit more free cash I will boil a sack and let you know

How about a soak in sterilising fluid ?

personally, I'd hate the waste, but considering what blight is, and how easily it spreads, I'd just burn the sack to be safe. Kept in a dark place, a pallet box with spaced slats would be far better to keep tatties aired.

I used the washing machine - 40 degrees with biological washing powder.

Val had a fit but all was OK when they were done :)

Visions of a baby being dunked in a vat of Milton's.

Washing machine it is then.
Trillium,I would use boxes more and all the dodgier potatoes are in them but it`s a question of space and I can hang all the sacks easily.
