Tiny egg
« on: April 03, 2011, 15:02 »
In the coop this morning, there's a perfect egg, with a beautiful brown speckled shell, but it's only about an inch long.

All my chooks are 1-3 years old and they all lay normally most of the time.

Does anybody know what makes them occasionally lay a tiny little egg like this one?

there is quite a lot of discussion on "wind eggs" on the forum.  Just do a search for the phrase on here and all will be revealed  :)

We had one a month ago , very porous shell which made the mini egg dry out fast.
Ours did have a tiny smear of yolk in it when i blew the contents out to save the shell.

Oh dear   It's deffo here somewhere as this is where I found out what wind eggs were, which is what your hen laid

Have a look through the Hen House and chicken chat. There might be some info in the poultry stickies too

I think it's a common occurrence and nothing to worry about.  I shall go have a look-see as well  :)

I did an advanced search and found two threads and lifted this comment from one of them

"These cute little marble size eggs are beleived to occur if/when a bit of foreign body gets into the tract. The little hens body automatically covers it with a shell and dutifully lays it for you. This is only supposed to happen to surround a proper yolk, but a teeny drip of left over yolk or anything in there triggers the response. It doesnt hurt the chook in any way. They call this a 'wind' egg. just accept it as a special little present   I have had a total of 3 so far, made a pinhole in each end, and BLEW them empty, so I have still got them"

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks for doing the legwork (or rather, mousework) compostqueen - interesting. This is only my second wind egg.
