I found a tiny egg im hen house today, it was about twice the size of a malteser (not sure on the spelling of that one, the chocolates) I think it was my aracana as it was the same shade of greenish shell, but a bit speckeldy.  thing is she has laid 3 eggs so far and they were all a good normal size.

Those small eggs just have egg white in them and are normally a sign of a bird thats about to finish laying. Three eggs isn't very much, so lets hope its just a hicup.

Bodger do you mean a bird that's about to finish laying for good? That's interesting.

Really hope yours is just a one-off Shazzer.

I had one of those teeny-tiny eggs from one of my girls this week, but she has laid normal eggs since then. I did have the odd one or two little eggs when my hens were first coming into lay as well!  :?

We usually get a tiny white only egg from birds that are just beginning to lay.  Never had one from a bird that's about to finish.  You been on the booze again Bodger????  :D

I never have.  Don't know why, I don't suppose there's anything wrong with it, but there's no point in an egg with no yolk.  I usually let the dog have them!  :)

These are sometimes called "wind eggs"

A  hen will create an egg around anything in the reproductive tract, normally a yolk.  But anything else like a small piece of tissue come loose can then be wrappe ut to form a tiny egg.

So it isn't necessarily a bad sign for Shazzer then?

No it's not - as well as at the end of their laying life they can produce them at the beginning too.

In our area of North Staffordshire we called them Wyn eggs, I suppose it might just as easily have been spelt 'win' :D
