Is it right that Red Baron are slower to burst into life than Sturon or Stuttgarter sets? Just wondered because my Red Baron seem to be in suspended animation :(

reds are always behind the yellow ones. this has an added advantage of harvesting yellows early. Last year I finished pulling all yellows out (size bigger than a cricket ball) while the reds where in max of a golf ball sized. but they bulk up at the very mid of summer.  :)

My Red Baron sets are just beginning to show now - I planted garlic at the same time and that showed virtually straight away - the Red Baron sets seem to have made strong root growth though (I had a quick look about a week ago just to make sure they were 'alive'  :D

On my  plot Reds are a bit more temperamental than white / yellow Onions.

Last year at harvest my yellow Onions were almost grapefruit size yet my Reds were smaller and some bolted.

I have tried to reduce bolting this year by buying heat treated sets so fingers crossed.
But as regards bursting into life they will do in the end. No worries,

I have warm climate envy when reading comments like that.  My potatoes have just started chitting.

"Burst into life" is hardly my experience of Red Baron and yet I continue to grow them. I am ruthless with ordinary onion varieties yet continue to plant sets of this duffer.

Go on now you can all send in photos of your giant Red Baron Onions.......

After repeatedly getting rubbish results from Red Baron I have stopped growing them. They have always either failed to grow to a useable size or have gone to seed even when planted just a few feet from the sturon which grows fine. My only successful red onions have been winter red onions.
