Sowing celeriac - cover seeds or not?
« on: March 23, 2011, 10:21 »
I've got some celeriac Giant Prague seeds which don't have any instructions on them, and I've found conflicting advice in different books and websites.

Should the seeds just be sown on top of the compost, or should they be covered with a thin sprinkling?

I would cover them wth a thin sprinkling of soil. :)

Just a light dusting of compost on top. You could sieve it over them   :)

As with celery the seeds need light to germinate so do not cover more than a sprinkle. Some advocate a top layer of vermiculite.

The seeds are minute so sow them on the surface and cover with plastic to maintain moist compost, and they require a temp of 10 to 15 degrees C to germinate.

I`m afraid you`ve now got conflicting advice, but all I can say is mine have germinated well.

hi veggie virgin,i followed the instructions on some thompson&morgan "monarch"seeds which was to sow on top of compost.they have all germinated well  but to do so they must be kept warm 20-25 c. i put mine ontop of my combi boiler with a plastic bag over the top of them.they germinated in about a week. :)

I'm a celeriac & celery surface sower - it was my understanding that sunlight was key to germination, so the seeds are lightly sprinkled onto a tray of damp compost (might even considered to be on the wet side) and the tray put on a south facing windowsill.  I don't even cover the tray with plastic or anything, and get good germination every time.
