Weird fungi
« on: March 21, 2011, 18:20 »
I have a raised bed which is covered over with plastic and it waters itself... anyway today I looked in it for the first time in about a week and there is a small cluster of what look like pasta shells. There is no way someone could have put them there unless they opened the cover and put them right at the opposite side. So they've obviously grown. There is a mix of salad leaves growing but they haven't had a great start and so they're really small. The pasta shells/fungi are bigger than the salad leaves.

Has anyone else grown pasta shells by accident? and what do you suppose the proper name for them is? I need to work out whether it's a good or bad thing.

Yeah it's Domicile cup fungus for sure. YUCK! I don't want to eat that. I want to plant my onions in the same spot and I hope the fungus doesn't come back. It's grossed me out a bit.

could some concrete or mortar dust have got in the bed? One of the cup fungi (might be the domicile one, my Roger Philips fungus book is packed away at the moment) is usually associated with limey material, and I used to get it growing in my outside toilet...!

There are other cup fungi that are very similar, potentially growing on a lump of wood or manure. It won't do any harm.

Good to know. I'm gonna spade them out, not touching them with my hands lol.
There is no way anything could b in there other than organic compost. Super strange.
