Shed intestine or Coccidiosis?
« on: March 21, 2011, 17:45 »
I was poo picking today and in the poop tray was a blooming blob and a blooming meaty fleshy looking piece of material.  It was really quite blooming   It's the first time this has happened and I'm worried.

My girls were wormed with Flubenvet just a few weeks ago
My girls are both three years 3 months old

Both girls are eating and drinking normally and have both been out and about all day and eaten their greens

If it was Coccidiosis would there be more than the one occurrence. At the moment it's just a couple of pieces of blooming material both of which were close together, eg deposited by one girl in one go

Do you have any coxoid or baycox?
Without seeinbg the droppings or the birds we can't be sure but just incase start a course immediatly.
If you want to read up about it here is a web page that explains in great detail:-

Staffies are softer than you think.

I was wondering if it  could be a lash?  Good luck and keep us posted.

I was wondering the same thing, given the chicken's age.  Hopefully nothing too serious.  Fingers crossed.

lashes aren't the colour of bright red blood.

I could be mistaken - but is this a lash? (no, not the 10p...)

could be - the ones my girls have laid were more egg shaped and when I sliced one open it was like wafer thin sliced ham with a milky liquid

Yep, had one like that a few weeks ago - actually saw the chook squat and"spit" it out! I didn't take a photo of that one though...thank goodness for digital photography, heaven alone knows what the film developers would make of some of our photos!

Definitely not a lash as they're the colour of ham and not blooming, well not as far as I've seen anyway

If it's something serious would I expect to see more of it tomorrow? Up to now it's just been the one episode.

I shall go and read that article Joyful thanks very much  :)

you may not see any more because as it's blood the others can and often do eat it if they see it, so please start treatment as soon as you can (today) just to be safe  :)

Nothing untoward this morning

What I wanted to ask was, I wormed them only in the past few weeks with Flubenvet. Would this not have zapped any internal parasites????????

I can get some of the medication you recommended from Petmeds etc

Thanks Joyful  :)

probably not as it would just zap the things it is meant to.
Also don't think you can eat the eggs whilst they are on coxoid/baycox but the label should let you know if this is correct  :)

I ordered the small size Coxoid online as the vet didn't have it and Interhatch only had the big size.  It should be delivered first class. Fingers crossed

Thanks for the advice  :)

The medicine has still not arrived but I have to say she seems absolutely fine and no more blooming faeces as I checked first thing this morning

In herself she seems just lovely

So, my question now is when the medcine turns up (it has been despatched) should I give her any?  I don't want to medicate unnecessarily and I don't like the thought of chucking eggs out if I don't have to  :)

Actually I'm not sure if I would treat for a week anyway, just to be sure.

Coccidiosis doesn't usually affect adults too badly, as by the time they are adults they have antibodies to the majority of strains.

It is chicks you have to be worried about, before they have built up immunity
