Coccidiosis?
« on: October 05, 2007, 07:53 »
Hi

My Blue Haze started to pick up. She still had yellow runny poo still but seemed okay in herself. She has since declined and is lookng under the weather again.

This morning when I opened them up she got up and I noticed a small egg like thing in the house where she'd been!

Is this Coccidiosis? I've read the sticky and it certainly sounds similar.

Does this mean the end of the infection or should I expect more bits coming out?

I will take her to the vet tonight, poor thing.

As always, appreciate any thoughts
Thanks

Beth

I don't understand this bit Beth.  Do you mean she laid a small soft shelled egg ?

Yellow foamy poo does indicate coccidiosis. I think it is reasonably easy to treat by the vet.

Hi Beth

How old is your hen and has she been laying? I am asking as I have read something similar recently when an egg had been broken internally and had been expelled as eggy bits... not sure if this is any help I am sure one of the experts can through more light on this condition but just a thought

Hi

Went to the vet and appartently it was a soft shelled egg. She said she may have peritonotis and gave me lots of anti-biotics to give her. The vet said she was scrambled eggs inside!

She seems much better now, and is eating and drinking - hopefully she will make a full recovery :)

She hasn't been laying eggs all summer but did all winter which we thought may be due to the funny weather?

The vet we went to was really good. She saw my chickens as animals in need and not just chickens!

Thanks for your help  :D

Keep an eye on her for those symptoms in the future Beth.  If she's had it once  she is likely to have it again  :(

Will do.

Chickens are great but they break your heart sometimes!

i've just stupidly lost 17 (so far) to this.  blood is very evident in droppings; they go sleepy and fluffed up too.  not interested in anything you do, food or water.  literally, some also look healthy one day, then flat out and dead the next morning.  it happens quick.  I suffered because of being clever and not using medicated crumbs for the first time!  live and learn the hard way.  am treating 6 survivors with coxidiostat in water.  fingers crossed they survive.  for the record, chicks are 2/3 weeks old.

of course, their immune system is not developed/established.  I missed early signs, so pay the price!
